Building Stair Railings

Before diving into the business of building a stair railing, contact your area inspector and ask about the structure of the building. How much thickness can a wall bear? How much support does it require?

Once you have all the measurements, tools, and precise data of the building structure according to the building code, it will be easier for you to build a stair railing without any errors.

The following is the procedure of building a stair railing:

Step No. 1 – Locating the Studs

The first step of building a stair railing is putting bolts into the studs. Make sure that all the bolts won’t go into the studs. Therefore, you need to find studs on the wall and consider their placements before putting the required bolts into them.

Use a flange to place the bolts inside studs. Each flange should accommodate at least two bolts. Finally, insert a T-join at a distance of four inches for the required support.

Step No. 2 – Ensuring a Sturdy Stair Railing

Building a stair railing requires many support pieces and end pieces. These pieces are responsible for a sturdy structure, without which the stair railing might not stay in place. Once you have ensured that all the support pieces and end pieces are in place, combine them to fasten the studs.

The combination of support pieces consists of t-joins, a connector, and a flange. On the other hand, the combination of end pieces consists of an elbow, a connector, and a flange.

Step No. 3 –Attaching the Support and End Pieces Combo

Now that you have collected all the support and end pieces, assemble them to easily combine the flange, connector, elbow, and a rod threaded on both ends. This is a temporary arrangement to hold the railing in place.

After that, combine t-join, flange along with the bolts, and a connector to the other rod and pack it with an elbow, flange, and a connector at the end. Attach these support and end pieces on the wall with the help of a screw. Finally, rotate the flanges to place the holes over a stud.

Step No. 4 – Threading the Rod

Firstly, align the elbows and t-joins and measure the space required to place between combo pieces. After that, using a threading machine, thread the rod and cut it according to the measurements.

Once you have threaded your rods for the action, clean them with sandpaper to eliminate grease. You don’t want to create an unnecessary mess amidst the scattered supplies. Finally, smooth the teeth marks of the threading machine prep it for the next step.

Step No. 5 – Placing the Stair Railing

It is time to take down the temporary arrangement of the wall and spray paint the railing in the color of your choice. Make sure it is dry before placing it on the wall. You can do so by using a small screw that can hold it all together. Also, don’t forget to paint the bolts as well to finish the look.

You can now place the stair railing on the walls. Moreover, you might want to look at the railing to check whether or not you want to change the placement of the railings. Finally, adjust to your taste if you feel like the angle is a bit tilted to the other side.

Final Word

Building stair railings can be fun if you have the correct measurements. In addition to that, you need to have proper supplies that include support pieces and end pieces, without which, it can be quite a task to build a railing and place it on your stairs.
