This is America: Trivia Game Categories and Questions
We have 5 suggested categories, with accompanying facts that you can convert into trivia questions. More categories are easy to come up with–just be creative. Feel free to set points for each question. It’s fun to play the game Jeopardy-style!
Founding Fathers
- Benjamin Franklin was also an inventor. Among his inventions are bifocals.
- John Adams’ wife, Abigail, encouraged him and Congress to be mindful of women.
- Charles Carroll signed the Declaration of Independence, but is more known for founding the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
- George Washington supposedly wore dentures made of wood. However, they weren’t made of wood–they were made of a variety of things including ivory and silver.
- Thomas Jefferson had a pair of grizzly bears as pets!
Lady Liberty
- The height of the Statue of Liberty from the tip of her torch to the base of her pedestal is 305 feet, 6 inches.
- Lady Liberty’s waistline is a total of 35 feet.
- In 1986, the torch was covered completely in 24k gold.
- The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886.
- It is 154 steps from the pedestal of the statue to her head.
The American Flag
- The flag’s original design stayed the same for 18 years, until 1795.
- Pennsylvania is the only state where Flag Day is a legal state holiday.
- The current rendition of the flag was designed in 1958 by a high school student from Ohio.
- A flag can be washed and dry cleaned if it touches the ground or gets dirty.
- The first official flag had 13 stripes and 13 stars, to represent the 13 colonies.
American Presidents
- George Washington was the only president to be elected unanimously.
- John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4th, 1826.
- Teddy Roosevelt was blind in one eye after being hit in a boxing match.
- President Harrison died only 32 days after his inauguration, from a cold he caught while giving his speech.
- George W. Bush is the only president to earn an MBA.
National Parks
- Acadia National Park is the oldest national park located east of the Mississippi.
- There are more than 2000 documented arches located inside Arches National Park.
- Grand Teton National Park got its name in the 19th century from French trappers.
- Two active volcanoes are located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
- Shenandoah National Park’s roads, rock walls and campgrounds were built during the Great Depression.
